The MPP for Perth-Wellington has announced new funding to support the mental health of local first responders.
Matthew Rae announced the funding on Friday. The $125,000 coming to his riding is part of the provincial government's $32 million investment into the Mental Health Supports for Public Safety Personnel program.
First responders can include fire fighters, police, and paramedics that respond to 911 calls and emergencies.
"These individuals are at a higher risk of experiencing occupational stress injuries because of routine exposure to traumatic events while responding to emergencies," Rae sid.
This funding will go towards creating specialized supports for first responders to support their mental health and well being.
In Perth-Wellington, the Municipality of North Perth Fire Service, Stratford Police Service, Town of Minto Fire Service, Mapleton Fire Rescue, and the County of Perth Emergency Health Service are all getting $25,000 each.
"Our provincial government will continue to stand with our first responders, so they can protect our rural communities," said Rae. "Our public safety personnel work tirelessly to protect and support our communities, and they deserve access to mental health services that meet their unique needs. We are committed to building strong and resilient first responders—and, in turn, strong and resilient communities."
