Goderich residents have been displaced following an apartment fire on Nelson Street Friday night.
Around 11:20 p.m., emergency services responded to a fully involved structure fire between Cambria Road North and Albert Street.
No injuries were reported.
Residents of the building were taken to the local Knights of Columbus, where Victim Services Huron Perth was on hand. OPP also evacuated homes on Brock Street and Nelson Street East, where residents were impacted by the heavy smoke.
The Goderich Fire Chief asked that residents keep their windows closed until further notice. Police are also asking that people steer clear of Nelson Street to allow emergency personnel to work.
In a social media update, Goderich Mayor Trevor Bazinet said the building is a complete loss.
"Tonight is an extremely hard night for several people in our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has lost their homes and all of their belongings," he wrote.
"Thank you for the courageous work of not only our Goderich Fire Department, but multiple surrounding Fire Departments, as well as the Huron OPP, EMS and everyone who has reached out to lend a helping hand."
The Office of the Fire Marshal has been contacted to determine the cause.
For those looking to support the families impacted, the Town of Goderich is asking for gift card donations instead of food items, to allow victims the flexibility to meet their specific needs during this difficult time.
Gift cards can be dropped off to Town Hall this Tuesday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
