The City of Owen Sound will officially commemorate a well-loved harbourfront space next week with a special plaque unveiling, celebrating the Manitoba-inspired lights and public area along the inner east harbour.
Although the space has already been a vibrant part of the community for years, the new plaque — generously funded by Ron Hopper — will formally recognize its historical significance and contribution to the area.
The centrepiece of the space is the Manitoba sculpture, located along the harbour walkway south of the Miller cement silos. The sculpture pays tribute to the Manitoba, a 305-foot-long steel-hulled ship built in Owen Sound by Polson Iron Works. Launched in May 1889, the Manitoba was the first steel-hulled ship constructed on the Great Lakes and featured a 250-foot upper deck with 64 staterooms finished in antique oak.
The unveiling ceremony will take place on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at the Manitoba site, just north of Mudtown Station Brewery & Restaurant. Immediately following, the brewery will host its regular Midweek Music event, beginning at 4:30 p.m., featuring local band Grey Road 1.
City officials, community members, and the public are invited to attend the event, which celebrates a unique blend of history, art, and public space.
