County's agricultural program wins EDCO award

Wellington County has won an award for its Experimental Acres program.

The program was launched as a way for the county to support environmentally friendly agriculture. It has won the prestigious Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) Award of Excellence in Rural Economic Development.

Announced at the EDCO Conference’s President's Dinner on Thursday, February 6, the award recognizes innovative, collaborative, distinctive achievements in economic development.

Experimental Acres offered up micro-grants of up to $3,000 and provided small and medium-sized farms in the area with the chance to trial "regenerative agriculture practices" in a low-risk environment. Soil testing and research support was also provided by the county.

Wellington County boasts 2,600 farms within its borders.
