United Way Perth Huron kicks off annual fundraising campaign

United Way Perth Huron kicked off its annual fundraising campaign on September 13 in Listowel.

The yearly fundraising campaign raises money that supports critical social services in the region.

Executive Director, Ryan Erb, says the United Way is the largest funder of social services next to the government, so the fundraising efforts are very key in terms of assisting those in our area who need it most.

"Here in North Perth there's over 20 services and programs that we support through the United Way and over time, new ones get added," he said. "For example, a few years ago the community said youth-at-risk was something they wanted to focus on, and so we were able to work together with our friends at Family Services and create a new program for vulnerable youth in the community, so they could access counselling."

There's also ongoing programs, with things like the 2-1-1 service, where people can call 24/7 and be directed to a service they need, and United Way's Urgent Needs Fund. The fund was established about three years ago, and Erb says many people have accessed it.

"So if a person who can't afford to pay a bill they're facing right now, and is choosing between paying the hydro or groceries, they can call. Or maybe they need dental work or something like that, whatever the case may be, that Urgent Needs Fund has become a really critical piece. Literally hundreds of people are using that on a regular basis," said Erb.

One big thing this year that money will go toward is the newly established United Housing, where United Way is going to build and operate affordable housing units in the region. Erb shares that North Perth is leading the way with the new program, with an exciting project on the horizon.

"It's a 10-unit renovation in downtown Listowel that's coming around the corner. We're gonna be able to put people that need housing in that location and support the workforce development that's need for the region, as well. So, it's a really exciting time to be part of things at the United Way," he stated proudly.

This year, the fundraising goal for the United Way campaign is $2.6 million.

"We're thrilled to kick off another campaign year in North Perth with our friends from Ward & Uptigrove," said Lee-Anne Andriessen, chair of the North Perth Community Committee. "United Way supports nearly 1,300 vulnerable people in our community and we’re looking forward to sharing more about how we make a difference."

United Way Perth Huron is holding another campaign kickoff event in Huron East. The campaign launch concert with local band Jellybean Blue will be held at Seaforth First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, September 22 at 7 p.m.
