Provincial police are already patrolling the waters of Lake Huron.
On Thursday, South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) launched a large marine unit in Kincardine, as boaters are expected to populate lakes and rivers over the next couple of months.
Before heading for the water, the OPP recommends boaters download the Safe Boating Guide.
The guide shows what safety equipment is required on board all sizes of vessel before you leave the dock.
Police are also reminding people that being impaired on a boat carries the same penalties as driving a car while impaired.
As people prepare for spring and summer, the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) is also gearing up to ensure boaters know the rules of being out on the water.
Safe Boating Awareness Week runs from May 18 to May 24 this year.
