Saugeen Conservation warns rising water levels pose a safety risk

Saugeen Conservation warns of potentially unsafe conditions in local watercourses due to high water levels.

Parts of Midwestern Ontario might see up to 60 mm of rain fall by the time this strong low-pressure system moves through, with rain expected to gradually taper off into Saturday morning.

Saugeen Conservation noted water levels are increasing rapidly and are expected to continue rising throughout the day and into the weekend.

While significant flooding is not expected, watercourses could reach or exceed bank-full conditions, with minor flooding in low-lying areas. More extensive flooding is possible should the region receive rainfall amounts greater than what is currently forecast.

People should avoid watercourses and structures like bridges or dams because of the dangers of elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along banks.

Recreational river users should take extra precautions, as higher water levels and faster flows are expected to persist throughout the weekend.

Saugeen Conservation staff will be closely monitoring the situation and will provide an update if conditions change. This message will remain in effect through the end of Monday, April 15th, 2024.
