Man arrested after attempting to steal taxi at knifepoint

A 48-year-old man of no fixed address is facing assault and robbery charges after attempting to steal an Owen Sound taxi at knifepoint on Saturday.

Local police responded to a 911 call on the upper east side of Owen Sound.

The driver told officers that his fare pulled a knife on him after he drove him to an agreed upon address.

Allegedly, the suspect demanded that the driver exit the taxi so he could steal it, but the suspect was unable to get the vehicle into gear to drive away. The taxi driver managed to regain possession of the keys and call police.

The driver did not sustain any injuries and the vehicle was undamaged.

According to police, the suspect took off on foot but was located a short distance away.

The 48-year-old man was charged with assault with a weapon, robbery, carrying a concealed weapon, theft and possession of property obtained by crime.

He was held pending a bail hearing on March 3 and subsequently remanded into custody.
