Flags have been lowered in Walkerton to mark the passing of David Thomson, the first Mayor of the Municipality of Brockton.
Thomson passed away over the weekend in Hanover at the age of 92.
He served a 30 year career in municipal government, beginning as a Councillor for the Township of Brant. He then became deputy reeve before filling the reeve's chair for 16 years.
Thomson then became Brockton’s first Mayor after amalgamation, serving from 1999 to 2003.
He was also the Warden for Bruce County in 1990.
In a media release, the municipality sends condolences to his family and friends and thanks Thomson for his service to the former Township of Brant, Municipality of Brockton, Bruce County, and the community as a whole.
According to the release, Thomson also donated the land for the Bruce County Public Library's Cargill Branch, advocated for the establishment of the Saugeen Municipal Airport, was a past-Chairman for the Hanover and District Hospital Board, and Special Events Committee member for the 1993 Ploughing Match.
On top of working in politics for over 30 years, Thomson was hailed as a pivotal member of the agricultural industry, which continued a family legacy.
A memorial visitation will be held this Sunday in Walkerton.
