A Toronto man was posthumously honoured with a Carnegie Medal for his efforts to save two people from drowning in Kincardine several years ago.
Aleem Ramji was one of 16 people recently awarded North America’s highest honor for civilian heroism.
On Sept. 3, 2020, two sisters, Raabia and Zeanna K. Basaria, were washed from the Kincaridne pier into Lake Huron and couldn’t get back to shore due to large waves and strong rip currents.
Their cousin, the 38-year-old Ramji, jumped into the water to save them. He was able to reach one of the sisters but the treacherous conditions separated them.
The two women were rescued from the lake, but tragically, Ramji didn’t survive.
The Carnegie Medal has been awarded to over 10,000 individuals since the inception of the Pittsburgh-based Fund in 1904. Each of the medal recipients or their survivors also receive a financial grant.
