Bruce Power reached a new three-year deal with a union representing nearly 30 per cent of its workers.
The Society of United Workers IFPTE Local 160 and the nuclear power company reached a tentative deal on June 15, with the assistance of a conciliator.
The deal was ratified on June 22 after three days of in-person voting.
Dave Ceksters, Vice-President of Local 160 of Society United Professionals, says the agreement is good for both sides.
"We ended up getting a fair economic package for our membership which reflects the cost of living related to inflation and the high real estate market in the area. They're very happy with the economic package and it's a fair deal for the employer as well," he said. "The extended health benefits, we got some enhancements which was helpful. We got some other issues resolved at the table that seemed to be holding the negotiations up, but we finally landed on a good settlement for the renewal of the collective agreement."
The exact results of the ratification vote won't be released but Ceksters says there was strong support from members throughout.
"We had a strong mandate to get this over the finish line with the employer, so we had that confidence going into bargaining that we had our full membership behind us," he said. "We had a ratification vote last week and an overwhelming majority voted to ratify the agreement going forward."
Around 1,200 of the company's 4,200 employees are Society members.
“Bruce Power is pleased to reach this new Collective Agreement and we want to once again acknowledge the important contributions our Society-represented employees play in providing clean and reliable electricity to the people and businesses of Ontario as well as helping to deliver cancer-fighting medical isotopes worldwide,” Bruce Power Vice-president Karen Smith said in a statement released to the media.
