The Municipality of Brockton is getting a grant to help establish the Market Garden Park project.
In a release, Brockton says the project was selected by the My Main Street Community Activator program, which is handled by the Canadian Urban Institute. The program has approved a $54,000 grant to help Brockton build the new park in downtown Walkerton. It will be located at 312 Durham Street, the former site of the Golden Wheel Restaurant. That restaurant was owned and operated by the Wong family, who were the first Chinese immigrants to settle in Walkerton, and they generously donated part of the land to the Municipality to create a public park, and a lasting legacy. Construction of the Market Garden Park is expected to begin later this summer.
The release states the goal of the new park is to "transform and activate a vacant lot in the heart of downtown Walkerton, creating a safe, accessible and dynamic urban space to support and inspire local residents, community groups, visitors and businesses."
