The mayor for Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh wants an opportunity to address Provincial officials at next month's Ontario Good Roads conference.
Glenn McNeil says the issue he wants to discuss is the number of gravel pits in the municipality.
McNeil says there is a large aggregate deposit under the ground in A-C-W and there are several pits extracting that gravel and that has led to concerns raised by some residents.
McNeil says the land is zoned for exactly what is taking place, and he points out municipalities throughout Huron County, and Ontario, must conform to Provincial regulations.
“The municipalities throughout Huron County and Ontario, must conform to Provincial regulations. So we follow the directives from our Province. So it isn't a matter that A-C-W would have a choice as to whether they re-zone it or not.”
McNeil adds that in some cases, the land being discussed is significant for other reasons, either scientifically or popular park ground areas.
He believes that should be taken into consideration.
“We're looking to make awareness of the situation and I think that's the first thing is to make our ministers realize and understand the implications of the present regulations. And we'll have that discussion.”
The Ontario Good Roads conference runs from April 10th to the 13th.
