Goderich puts safety first in ship watching

Goderich Mayor John Grace says public interest in the loading of some ships on the pier on the south side of harbour has created some safety issues.

Grace says they understand the interest, but adds, safety has to be their priority.

"When ships are loading, they need to fence off the start of the pier and the dock going back to the Elevators and the public really wants to be front and centre with the ships and it really is a bit of a tourist attraction,” said Grace.

"So, there have been things put in place because of the type of loading dock that they have now at the P & H Elevators. It allows them to have bigger ships, but it allows them to move along the pier in order to load, faster and more efficiently.”

Goderich council is reviewing the situation and a possible solution could be announced at a future council meeting.
