Huron-Kinloss has announced a new 10 year pilot project that will allow the use of golf carts on certain municipal roads.
In a release, the municipality says the pilot project will "assess the viability of allowing golf carts to be used on roads in the Municipality of Huron-Kinloss from April 1 to November 30" on a yearly basis. The project will allow residents to use golf carts on municipal roads where the speed limit is 50 km/h, based on local municipal bylaws. Anyone driving a golf cart in the municipality on the allowed roads must have a valid A, B, C, D, E, F or G licence. Some other municipalities around Ontario are participating in the project, and the province will use the information gathered from municipalities during the project to decide if golf carts will be allowed permanently for use on certain roadways.
All of the requirements for safely operating a golf cart during this pilot project are available on Ontario.ca.
“I’ve spoken to local residents who have expressed their desire for safe, new, environmentally friendly methods to get around the community,” says Lisa Thompson, MPP for Huron-Bruce. “While this golf cart pilot program will assess the realities associated with this mode of transportation, it is anticipated it will also provide a convenient way for people to get around for everyday travel when close to their cottage or home.”
“Municipalities know what transit options are best for the unique needs of their community, which is why Ontario worked with the municipality of Huron-Kinloss to allow golf carts to be used on local roads after initial requests were made,” adds Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation. “By launching a pilot program that allows people to operate golf carts on roads in Huron-Kinloss, we’re meeting the needs of residents by delivering another mode of transportation in their community.”
