UPDATE: Home destroyed during fire in Brussels

A home in Brussels no longer stands following a fire on Alexander Street.

According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the fire call came in shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, and emergency crews arrived to a fully engulfed, two-storey home.

Firefighters say the only occupant of the home, who made the call to the fire department, escaped safely along with two dogs.

By 8 p.m. a backhoe was used to demolish the rest of the burning house which had to be hosed down by firefighters afterwards.

The area remains closed as of 9 p.m. to all traffic while crews continue to work on the rest of the fire.

As of Wednesday morning, Huron East Fire Chief Marty Bedard says it was a total loss and confirmed the fire started in the kitchen during unattended cooking.
