Huron Perth Public Health is reminding residents to protect themselves from mosquitos after a collection of mosquitoes from a trap near Mitchell tested positive for the West Nile virus.
This is the first positive test found this year in the area.
Huron Perth Public Health has a few tips for the public to protect from mosquitoes. They include:
-Using an insect repellent when outdoors containing DEET or Icaridin. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions. -Covering up with light-coloured clothes, long sleeves and pants when outdoors or in areas where mosquito activity is high. -Taking extra protection measures at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. -Removing standing water around the home at least once a week to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.
No cases in humans have been reported in Ontario this year. Huron Perth Public Health has been trapping and collecting mosquitoes since June 8 this year. To reduce the risk of potential West Nile transmission, larvicide is applied to roadside catch basins in Stratford, St. Marys, Listowel and Mitchell this summer to help reduce mosquito breeding.
“It’s not surprising to see positive mosquito pools in the month of August,” says Kaitlyn Kelly, public health inspector. “In the late summer months, people are at greatest risk of contracting West Nile virus, so it is important to protect yourself while outdoors when mosquitoes are most active.”
