Local council addresses concerns over racing event

The Mayor of Huron East says the concerns of several councillors and Huron East residents about this month's Walton Motocross event were addressed at their last council meeting.

Bernie MacLellan says the concerns were around safety issues in the middle of a pandemic, given the number of people that event usually attracts. "Once the proper information had been relayed, that it's not a public open, so there is no public. It's racers only and their crew and their families, so it's not something you go up to the gate, buy a ticket and go in and watch."

MacLellan also pointed out that the authority to approve or deny the event rests with the Province, not the municipality.

"The Province has reviewed the event. They're okay for it to go ahead. They're also working with the Huron Perth Public Health Unit to make sure that all the guidelines for social distancing and whatever else is required is being adhered to. So, at the moment, we hope everything goes off without a hitch."

More information about the event can be found on the Walton Motocross website.
