A Saugeen First Nation man is accused of fleeing from the police and later threatening them with a knife.
Grey Bruce OPP said the incident started around 1 p.m. on Sunday when officers got a report of a motorist driving through stop signs, speeding, and disregarding the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. Police were told the driver waved "an edged weapon" at the pedestrians and cyclists and threatened them.
Officers found the vehicle on Highway 21 and were able to get the driver to stop. Police said the driver got out, showed a knife, and exchanged words with officers before getting back in his car and driving away.
Police later tried to use a tire deflation device. The driver is reported to have swerved to avoid it but ended up going into the ditch and crossing two fence lines -- a distance of 500 metres -- before coming to rest in a swampy, wooded area.
Police said the driver ran but officers caught up with him. After negotiating with him to drop the weapon, the driver was arrested.
A 48-year-old man from Saugeen First Nation is now charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
