Water and sewer rates will be going up in Goderich

Goderich ratepayers are going to have to start paying more for their water and sewer treatment.

Mayor John Grace said they're meeting standards now but it's an aging facility. And by building the capital in their reserves now, they follow up on necessary upgrades before they become emergencies.

“Primarily because we're looking at an aging facility and a lot of the stuff needs to be replaced and we need to build the capital in our reserves to take on, not expansion, but upgrade,” said Grace.

The rates will go up this year by 1.5 per cent.

“So this coming fiscal year, it'll only go up by 1.5. In 2021 both water and sewer treatment will be going up 4.8 per cent each year for a number of years,” added Grace.

Currently, the standards set by the province are being met but it's important they stay ahead of the game and keep their facilities up to date.
