Local Catholic schools closed Tuesday

The association representing Catholic elementary and high school teachers withdrew services Tuesday because of their concerns about cuts to the education system.

Another issue is the concern about larger class sizes.

The action forced Catholic school boards, including those in Huron-Perth, Bruce-Grey and Wellington, to close their schools to students.

The one-day strike is the latest job action by the union which to this point has only engaged in a work-to-rule campaign.

“It has become clear that this government will only do the right thing when they are under pressure from Ontarians,” OECTA President Liz Stuart stated in a recent release. "They have left us little choice but to take the next legal step in the bargaining process."

Members from other teacher's groups, including those from the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario, joined their OECTA counterparts on picket lines on Tuesday.

ETFO job action will affect schools in the Avon-Maitland District School Board on Thursday and the Bluewater District School Board on Friday.
