A PhD candidate at Western University recently tackled the issue of single use plastics at the Lake Huron Centre's Municipal Forum.
Sara Belontz says a throw-away lifestyle isn't viable anymore as the waste piles up.
"Because in the end, regardless of how efficient a recycling plant is, a lot of times, unfortunately, these plastics are gonna end up in land fills, are gonna end in waterways and rivers and oceans," said Belontz.
But younger generations are trying new things.
"Certain high schools or elementary schools are being really positive towards change and are moving from using single-use plastic bottles towards reusable bottles and even participating in running a station in London at the Children's Water Festival," said Belontz.
Several environmental action student groups have also formed in Huron County high schools and are actively working to eliminate single-use plastics in their communities.
