Bluewater to change household garbage/recyclables contract

Bluewater council has voted to switch to a single Automated Co-collection Contract for household garbage and recyclables pick-up and disposal for 2020.

Mayor Paul Klopp said there some differing opinions on the switch, but in the end, it was agreed that rising costs were going to drive the price of the old system up if they stayed with that.

Klopp said the real costs of the system exceeds the revenue generated by the garbage bag tags.

“The reality of it is, it costs more, in the neighbourhood of $700,000 that we need in our budget for waste and to put money aside for future shutdowns and future alternatives and that was on our tax bill, so everybody was paying that," he said.

Klopp said under the new system, everyone will be billed, based on their assessment and pay on their tax bill. Residents will decide the size of the container they want to use, based on their estimated volume.

“This system allows that everybody has an up-front charge, you decide what size container you buy and what you think your volume is, but for the vast majority, it really isn't gonna be costing any more. In some cases, it's gonna be costing less. You just see it upfront," he said.

Klopp added there won't be any more garbage bag tags under the new system.
