Saugeen First Nation seeking court ruling in Sauble Beach claim

The Saugeen First Nation has served a summary judgement motion as part of a lawsuit to confirm Saugeen ownership of Sauble Beach.

In a release, Saugeen Chief Lester Anoquot called this a significant step towards righting a wrong that is older than Canada, and that they are looking forward to "finally having their day in court".

Anoquot said South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Janice Jackson is "not interested in being neighbourly, and is more concerned with politics than evidence."

The federal government began litigation on Saugeen First Nation's behalf in 1990 to address claims of ownership to portions of the northern end of the Saugeen reserve

The lands subject to litigation include a strip of beach west of Lakeview Blvd that extends between 1st Street South and 6th Street North.
