Huron County staff has offered Huron East a couple of options in dealing with the odour from a cannabis-growing operation in Vanastra.
The operation is indoors, but Mayor Bernie MacLellan said they've had several complaints from neighbours about the smell. MacLellan also said the operation on the property complies with the zoning for that property.
The first option would be to impose a moratorium on the operation immediately. But MacLellan said that would require the municipality to enter into a scientific study, which would be very costly, with uncertain results. The moratorium would only be good for one year.
The second option, and the one the municipality has chosen, is to put distance restrictions, similar to MDS distances from an operation. MacLellan said those would vary depending on the operation. He added it only applies to future situations and will not affect any operation that is already up and running.
Huron East will be hosting a public meeting in August to give people an opportunity to ask questions and provide input.
