Rural libraries to feel impact of provincial funding reduction

Huron County's director of cultural services is not sure how the cuts in provincial funding to the Southern Ontario Library Service (SOLS) will affect local libraries.

The province has announced funding to the Southern Ontario Library Service and Ontario Library Service-North will be cut by 50 per cent.

Beth Rumble said it will have an impact in Huron County, and other rural areas.

"We rely on them heavily to achieve some efficiencies by coordinating such things as our inter-library loans, which move books across libraries throughout Ontario, they provide centralized training for public libraries across Ontario, as well as other consulting services," said Rumble. "They've also done a lot of work in governance lately."

Rumble said SOLS officials haven't indicated how they're going to manage the 50 per cent cut to their funding, but it will eventually be felt at the local level.
