North Huron council learns about cyber-security insurance

Small municipalities like North Huron are not immune to cyber-attacks.

Kyle David, an account executive with Insurance Broker Aon, said steps are being taken to cover incidents related to cybersecurity, noting North Huron and other nearby municipalities had been recently targetted.

David said North Huron's "Cyber/Breach Response" coverage limit is now $2 million, covers up to 5,000 individuals, and has a $5,000 deductible.

The coverage includes cyber extortion, data protection loss, electronic crime, fraudulent instruction and telecommunications fraud.

North Huron CAO Dwayne Evans confirmed there was an attempt to get into the township's online system late last year.

"In terms of whether they got in or not, I don't think has been clearly established," he said.

Evans said North Huron's IT Department is now "ramping up" cyber-security measures to protect against future attacks.
