Local MPP pleased with transit funding for riding

Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece is delighted with new funding that will go toward public transit initiatives in his riding.

The provincial government has awarded Perth-Wellington $785,000 toward public transit projects, with the money being split among a number of communities.

MPP Pettapiece said the new funding, from the gas tax, will be very beneficial.

"We're very pleased the government has released those funds, and it certainly helps those communities that have public transit to keep it going, and help expand it," he said.

Pettapiece said communities had to already be investing in public transit to qualify for the funding.

The money will be split between Stratford ($460,482), North Perth ($64,941), Perth East ($67,580), West Perth ($70,947) and the Town of St. Marys ($121,907).

Pettapiece also said the funding will help in maintaining and expanding public transit projects, which will be very helpful to residents.

"It certainly helps them and I think people know there is issues with transportation in rural areas and it helps people that don't have the means to own a car or get to where they want to go," he said.

With those existing issues, Pettapiece said it's critical that public transportation be accessible. He also said the money can go toward new projects, but it will mostly be earmarked toward maintaining current services and aiding in budget considerations.
