Population growth in Mount Forest using up sewage capacity

As Wellington North prepares to build a new sewage treatment facility in Arthur, Mayor Andy Lennox said it’s not too soon to start thinking about a new one in Mount Forest.

The Mount Forest plant has about 700 units of unused capacity, but Lennox said the approval process for a new one can take eight years or more.

He said Mount Forest has plenty of capacity right now, but it is using up about 100 units per year with population and development growth, which means it could run out in seven or eight years.

Meanwhile, plans for the replacement for Arthur’s wastewater treatment plant continue.  The 30-year-old facility is running at capacity.

Last week, Wellington North received a grant of $750,000 from the Federal Green Municipal Fund as well as the option of a $5 million loan.  The Arthur project is expected to go to tender soon.
