CKNX Health Care Heroes Radiothon - Listowel

The Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation is raising money through Saturday's CKNX Health Care Heroes Radiothon to help with patient mobility and comfort.

That includes beds and wheelchairs.

VP of Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive Shannon Maier said beds play more of a role than what some people may think, helping in patient recovery.

"It allows them to rest in an environment that prevents wounds or pressure sores from developing," said Maier. "In terms of the wheelchairs, we use those all through the hospital and some patients use them for their entire stay. We also use them to move patients around the hospital for their comfort and to make tests and services accessible to them."

Maier said that even a good wheelchair could help patients be with their family.

"Something like an adequate or a safe wheelchair might make the difference for a patient, who is here for a longer term, be able to leave the room or sit with their family in a sunroom or join in some of the activities," she said.

Maier said that without an increase in the budget even more maintenance must be done.

"Knowing that equipment breaks down over time, we have processes in the hospital to make sure that we are keeping our equipment in shape, in terms of preventative maintenance and replacement, but medical equipment is really expensive," she said.
