AMDSB schools examine math teaching methods for 2018-2019

The chair of the Avon Maitland District School Board says the new school year offers some exciting opportunities.

Randy Wagler said there will definitely be a focus on how math is delivered this year.

"We know that math scores across the province aren't what, I think, all of us would want, so sure that'll be a continued focus for us to look at how we deliver math. And I think one other thing we'll continue to look at is how we're using technology in the classrooms," said Wagler. "We've invested a lot in technology, we very much believe it can assist in learning and we just want to make sure that continues because we've been at the forefront of that and we think it can be a real benefit for our students."

As far as enrolment levels, Wagler said he expects to see some stability at the elementary level, with a slight increase in some areas.

He said he also expects to see a continued decline in the second panel as the declines that had been experienced in the elementary panel a few years ago make their way through the secondary level.
