Stricter Smoking And Vaping Laws Start Soon In Huron County

A new bylaw will soon outlaw smoking or vaping of tobacco or cannabis anywhere on Huron County-owned property.

On September 1, smoking or holding lighted or heated tobacco or cannabis will be prohibited on properties such as social services, the museum, by the Courthouse in Goderich and at the health unit.  County housing facilities are exempt.

“There are many benefits to smoke-free spaces,” says Angela Willert, the senior public health promoter with the Huron County Health Unit. “Bylaws such as this one help reduce health risks of secondhand smoke, denormalize tobacco use, and create a supportive environment for those looking to quit.”

The bylaw was confirmed last December. Violators would face fines of $105 starting in 2019.
