Huron-Bruce new democrats are looking to build on a best-ever result as the provincial election approaches.
Jan Johnstone will carry the NDP banner on June 7th, after being acclaimed during a nomination meeting in Kincardine on Friday night.
Johnstone was the NDP candidate during the 2014 provincial campaign that saw the NDP capture 22% of the vote, the party's best result since the riding was established in 1999.
She says people and polls are both saying there's a desire for a change in government and she wants to be part of positive change.
"I think folks are looking for someone who is from the riding who has actually showed they care about the riding, I'm a public school trustee, vice-chair of the [Bluewater] board," says Johnstone. "Consistently, I've shown that I stand up for people and I've been a great advocate."
Johnstone says she'll be running on the NDP's commitment to make life more affordable for families, pointing to Liberal decisions like the privatization of Hydro One and hydro prices as a reason why the electorate is seeking a change of government.
"It created a problem, especially in rural Ontario particularly, that people were having to make a decision, whether they were basically going to heat their house, or put food on their table," says Johnstone.
The Bluewater District School Board trustee is entering her third campaign as an NDP candidate, having also run federally in 1997.
Johnstone will challenge Progressive Conservative incumbent Lisa Thompson and Liberal candidate Don Matheson.
