The detachment commander for the OPP in Huron County is optimistic about the future of the new Police-Youth Advisory Council.
Inspector Jason Younan says based on the positive energy at the recent inaugural meeting, the new council is off to a great start.
The Police-YAC is made up of about a dozen Grade 9 to Grade 12 students from each of the five Huron County High Schools. The council is co-chaired by a member of the Huron OPP Detachment and a student representative.
The vision of the council is to build a strong police-youth partnership that will empower youth to improve Huron County communities.
The council is looking for more members who can attend monthly meetings for a one-year commitment. Students are encouraged to contact their school principal or vice-principal for an application and further details.
"I anticipate this council will not only provide varied opportunities for youth leadership and personal development, it will also help Huron OPP further connect and collaborate with our high school students," says Younan. "Strengthening and building trusting relationships with students will also help us identify and address any concerns and issues our youth may be experiencing."
