Chesley residents got some relatively good news, there could be a new bridge open in the town by the end of this year.
Two weeks ago the bridge over the Saugeen River was irreparably damaged by flood waters, cutting the town in two.
About 200 people attended a meeting to hear details of Bruce County's plan to replace the bridge.
It was originally thought it could take up to two years.
The county's engineering department along with consultants have a plan to have a new bridge open by December of this year.
"I'm impressed by what these gentlemen and lady have done," says Chesley resident Percy West. They've obviously prepared for it and they've done a lot of work, a lot of planning and if they can stick to that schedule I think we should be thankful," said West.
Bruce County Warden and Arran Elderslie Mayor Paul Eagleson believes it's possible.
"We're moving very quickly. Some might say you can't by December '18. Well, give us a chance. Let us show you that we can," says Eagleson.
In the meantime, it will still be a hardship for many people, especially seniors to get to the downtown area by a long alternate route. A pedestrian bridge was ruled out as being too complicated and expensive. Arran Elderslie Township is looking into providing a shuttle service, but details still have to be worked out.
Chesley business people are worried about the effects of the closure of the bridge.
Vehicles have to take a complicated detour and in many cases don't come into town at all.
Chesley Grocery store owner Peter Knipfel says he's already seen negative effects. He hopes Bruce County's Economic Development department can help let people know they're open for business.
"It's just a matter of letting people know that we are there and we're going to be there and we're going to help consumers any way we can to get the products they need," says Knipfel.
It's estimated the new bridge in Chesley will cost $3.2-million.
