The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is looking for about 20 volunteers to be Coast Watchers along the Lake shoreline.
Coastal Stewardship Coordinator Hannah Cann says they're looking for volunteers from Manitoulin Island to Port Franks and volunteers can be any age, and with or without any previous training.
They will be asked to simply walk along the beach a couple of times a week, make note of changes and submit that data to the centre. Cann says they would typically note things like wind speed and wave height and whether they can see the horizon as well as air temperature.
"They don't have an ecological background but they enjoy and appreciate Lake Huron and they notice these different changes", explains Cann. "We give you a little bit of training when you become a volunteer in order to know what we're looking for with our data and it's fairly simple. Usually, the monitoring takes less than five minutes out on the beach."
She points out that monitoring changes over a long period of time helps them identify whether the areas are seeing more of a significant impact due to water level change or climate change or even atmospheric changes due to El Nino.
