Wellington North Opposes Changes To Councillors' Compensation

Wellington North council has added its voice to the chorus of municipal councils opposed to the loss of their tax-free status on one-third of their annual remuneration.

The federal government is planning to eliminate the tax bonus in 2019.

Wellington North expressed its opposition after hearing that it will cost the municipality over $16,000 annually in order to compensate members of council for the lost income.

Mayor Andy Lennox says it's important that members of council continue be paid at the current rate in order to fairly compensate them for time spent away from other jobs.

Lennox says if councillors' compensation drops, it may make it harder to find people to serve on councils.
