The Huron County Health Unit is offering suggestions for residents to safely clean up after the flood.
Public Health Inspector Mike Park says well owners in areas that received heavy rain or flooding need to test their water quality now.
Flood water can be heavily contaminated with sewage and pollutants that can cause sickness and infections.
Wells in low lying flood prone areas are most at risk, as are dug wells, well pits and well casing without a proper seal.
If the water has an odour, off taste or is discoloured, you should boil the water before use, until a test confirms it's safe. Do not use your septic system until the water level in the soil absorption field is lower than the level of water around the house. Use chlorine to disinfect your basement if sewage backed up.
You should wear gloves, a mask, goggles, and rubber boots as you clean up. Removing standing water, and then use soap to clean affected areas. Dry them as quickly as possible. Use fans, heaters and dehumidifiers to prevent mould.
As well, discard household items that cannot be dried within 48 hours.
