Huron County Clarifies ATV Road Use In New Bylaw

Huron County council has approved a bylaw aimed at clarifying ATV use on county roads.

County Engineer Steve Lund says the bylaw, which was passed on Wednesday, will prohibit ATV use on any county roads with the exception of vehicles being used for agriculture. Lund adds the county would allow sections of county roads to provide links to trails if a trails system, such as the one established by the Maitland ATV Club in the past, was formed. The club no longer exists.

Lund notes part of the confusion is that some municipalities allow ATV use on their roads while others don't and ATVs are also allowed on some sections of provincial Hwy. 4 and Hwy. 8. Lund says that creates the potential for problems in enforcement, as well as for users who might know whether they're allowed on a particular section of road or not.

Lund suggests that anyone using an ATV for recreational use in Huron County check ahead of time to make sure ATVs are allowed on the road they hope to use.
