Alternative Geese Nesting Prevention Options In Listowel Park

A group in Listowel is hoping there are fewer geese in one of the parks this spring.

Members of the Memorial Park Rehabilitation Committee are setting up wildlife decoys in traditional nesting areas.   This practice will attempt to limit the number of geese nesting in the park in an environmentally friendly way.

Committee members will change the placement of the decoys on a regular basis to decrease the chance of nesting.  They are also using their own money to purchase the decoys.

Large numbers of geese have negative impacts on the park and its users, including the accumulation of feces, degraded water quality, property damage and safety risks.

The naturalization of the Maitland River and the Listowel Memorial Park Rehabilitation project have been successful in reducing the geese population in the park.
