Hydro One Agrees To Stop Some Delinquent Disconnects

The Bruce Grey United Way's campaign to help people with their hydro bills has a small victory.

Hydro One has agreed to stop disconnecting peoples' electricity immediately.

The United Way's Francesca Dobbyn has been trying to convince the utility to stop cutting off people who can't pay their bills. She says she heard from Hydro One Monday afternoon, and they've agreed to stop the practice right away.

Normally they don't cut people off between December first and March 31, but Dobbin says the few days make a big difference.

"It means a lot to those people and I've already seen some comments from people on Facebook who are totally relieved with this because they were scheduled for a pre December 1 disconnection," says Dobbyn.

She adds people who would have been cut off before December 1 would not get their electricity back until they paid their bill in full.

Dobbyn says the Bruce Grey United Way has already had a 30% increase in the number of people applying for help to pay their heating bills.
