The Township of North Huron held a gathering at the Wingham Town Hall Theatre to celebrate funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
The funding will aid the renovations at the historic theatre, and a local support group, the Town Hall Theatre Committee, helped to get the money. Reeve Neil Vincent says he's really proud that locals are taking it upon themselves to help the theatre.
"It's an elation of the heart for me, to see a project taken care of, because people definitely want to see it, and that they've said 'Yeah, the budgets are hard enough, we'll find another way of doing it.'"
Reeve Vincent says with the Trillium grant of $30,000, the Town Hall Supporters Committee is roughly at $105,00 of the $120,000 they hope to raise to help renovate the historic building. He also states the theatre is historically significant, and has hosted many important visitors.
"I read an article on how Sir Wilfrid Laurier, in the 1903 election I think it was, attended the Wingham Opera House as one of his stops to speak. I think that speaks to the history of this building."
