New Approach To Treating Stroke Patients Underway

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance's Stratford General Hospital is an important part of the South West Stroke Project to realign stroke care in the region.

The Southwest Local Health Integration Network is working to ensure stroke victims get the best possible care. The project will see stroke expertise concentrated at seven designated stroke centres.

Stratford General Hospital has been designated to provide clot busting drug assessment and treatment, along with acute and rehabilitative stroke care.

Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich will also provide the clot busting drug assessment and treatment using the Telestroke program, before transferring patients to Stratford for any further care.

“The research is clear - integrated stroke units that combine acute and rehabilitative care significantly improve patient outcomes," says Andrew Williams, president and CEO of the HPHA. "As such, I commend the HPHA Stroke Team Members for their efforts in planning, developing and implementing such a unit at our Stratford site, and am excited about the improvements in care that will result for the residents of Huron and Perth."

The project to realign stroke care in Huron Perth should be complete in December.

The other centres that will be part of the realignment are London Health Science's University Hospital, Grey Bruce Health Services’ Owen Sound Hospital, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Care London’s Parkwood Institute, and Woodstock Hospital.

“People who are having the signs of stroke play an important role because with stroke, every minute counts. It is vitally important for people to call 911 immediately when the signs of stroke emerge.” says Jeff Horseman, chief of emergency services for Huron County.
