Saugeen Shores Council To Consider Chickens And Eggs

A Saugeen Shores Councillor is looking for approval to allow urban residents to raise their own chickens.

John Rich has tabled a notice of motion seeking a bylaw to allow small chicken coops for egg production on urban properties in Port Elgin and Southampton.

He says a number of residents have approached him about the idea and he thinks it can work if it is done properly.

Rich says he does not believe there will be much opposition to chicken coops in a community with rural roots like Saugeen Shores.

"As long as you put restrictions on things like roosters and make sure the waste is properly disposed of, I don't think there will be a real issue, I think people are used to wildlife around here," says Rich.

He admits chicken coops will likely attract predators like coyotes, but adds those animals are already around in urban areas and as long as the chickens are properly penned in, there should not be any issues.

Saugeen Shores council will debate the issue at its next meeting on October 24.
