Monkton Fire Station Bids All Over Budget

Bids for the Monkton Fire Station replacement project all came in over budget.

The 2016 Capital Budget for the North Perth Fire Department allocated $600,000. for the new fire station.

5 bids were opened in June with the prices for the project ranging from 1.07 million to 1.59 million dollars.

A report to council says the project was initially estimated in 2008.

New Accessibility requirements and the fall of the Canadian dollar contributed to the high bids.

Fire Chief Ed Smith says the committee will have to reconsider their options.

He says, "We basically didn't get a whole lot of direction to decide whether we go back to requests for Proposals again in the New Year."
Smith hopes council will increase the budget.  He says it's a pretty basic facility.
He explains  "Just a meeting room and two offices, and washrooms, and then the truck bays."
