Owen Sound Police Raise Pride Flag to Show Support

There's now a rainbow pride flag flying above Owen Sound police headquarters.

A large crowd gathered as Chief Bill Sornberger raised the flag as a show of support for the LGBT community.

Joan Beecroft is a founding member of Grey Bruce PRIDE.

"It's a sign of inclusion and safety in our own community. I think that's true for any flag that goes up but when our flag goes up it really means that especially in view of what just happened in Orlando," says Beecroft.

Chief Bill Sornberger says it was an easy decision to raise the pride flag to show Owen Sound police are there to serve everyone in the community.

Many people feel it's time the pride flag was flown in front of Owen Sound city hall.

A year ago, city council turned down a request from the PRIDE group to fly the rainbow flag.

It's city policy that only the flags of Owen Sound, Grey County, the provinces, Canada, the Commonwealth, United Nations, Remembrance Day or countries of visiting dignitaries are to be allowed.
