The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has deemed all of Huron and Bruce Counties as ‘Low Area Capability’ for large-scale renewable projects.
The region was formerly a no area capability, meaning there was no room on the grid to feed turbine energy.
This as the province accepts a new round of proposals for new green energy contracts
The Multi-Municipal Wind Turbine Working Group has passed a resolution asking the province to make municipal support resolutions a mandatory part of the process to award new wind farm contracts.
The group says the government had promised all new contracts would be awarded to willing host communities. However three of the contracts awarded in March did not have municipal support.
The group wants the details of proposed projects presented to municipalities before they are asked to make a decision instead of being forced to make decisions with little information.
And it asks that only First Nations with land in the proposed project zone have the power to support those projects.
The support of First Nations near James Bay with financial interests in wind companies was enough to get some projects approved far away in southern Ontario.
