Bruce Power Hosts Bruce County Fire School

For the first time, the 26th Annual Mutual Aid Bruce County Fire School was held at Bruce Power's Fire Training Facility.

About 60 firefighters from 17 local stations took part in the three day session over the weekend.

It's a chance for firefighters from different communities to share best practices and operational tactics.

Training opportunities included Class A/B Fire Training, Auto Extrication, Rural Water, and High Angle Rescue.

Last year, Bruce Power opened a new 23,000 square foot fire training facility.

The $25 million dollar facility took 18 months to build. It includes a mock up of a turbine generator, which allows realistic practice scenarios.

Propane fueled props produce fire and smoke to simulate a variety of situations, while thermal cameras throughout the building stream video footage to the control room.

“It was a privilege to host a number of firefighters for across the county at our new fire training facility,” said Gary Smith, Section Manager, Emergency and Protective Services, Bruce Power. “We are fortunate to have many of our on-site firefighters volunteer with their community fire departments as well.”

“The training was excellent and very hands on,” said Conner Rouse, of the North Bruce Peninsula Fire Department. “It was great to have everyone come together and learn from one another.”
