West Perth Resident Almost Loses Out In Secret Shopper Scam

A West Perth woman called police after receiving a text saying she was selected to become a mystery shopper.

The resident signed up, and received a letter in the mail with a cheque for $2,480.58. She was supposed to keep $400 and wire the remaining funds using a local transfer service. She was told she would be evaluating the local transfer service after customer complaints.

The resident sent a number of money transfers to a third party in England, before telling a family member about how easy it was to earn money. The family member recognized the scam, and they managed to cancel the money transfer.

The old "secret shopper scam" has moved from getting a letter in the mail, to social media messages.
