Huron East Council Votes Against Downsizing

A proposal to reduce the size of Huron East council didn't get much support at last night's council meeting.

Mayor Bernie MacLellan explains Huron East has the largest number of council members at twelve, compared to fifteen for Huron County council. MacLellan says the objective in reducing the size of council would be to reduce costs, but he points out it wouldn't just be a matter of how much each councillor is paid, but also the number of events like conferences they attend each year.

MacLellan says he was one of the councillors who questioned whether it was necessary to have two councillors for each ward sit on council, and he says the proposal generated a lot of valuable discussion, and in the end council voted to keep the current number of councillors.

Huron East is also one of the largest municipalities in the county but MacLellan points out it definitely does not have the largest population, and believes the size of council should be related to the population and not the amount of land covered.
